More than just a monument to sarcasm

So here it is at last - the weblog of the Paternal Optimist. It's been gestating for some time, but to be honest the birth has been, thus far at least - without complications and surprisingly painless. Now, of course, it has to be nourished and nurtured so that it grows into a nice healthy bouncing baby of a blog.

In fact, this does not consitute the PO's first appearance on the net - more of that noteworthy event later - but I must admit that it feels good to have a real concrete presence at last, a home of my own, if you will.

With family members of varying notoriety - in particular on the side of Our American Cousins - having long since established themselves as habitués of the web, I was beginning to feel ever so slightly inadequate. Hell, even the Boy Wonder made it onto the web before I did, as a nine-year-old, in a list of successful participants in a chess tournament (alas, his fame was fleeting, as the search engines I have tried no longer return any results).

Indeed, my only claim to internet fame before the publishing of this blog was this : if you type the phrase walking monument to sarcasm into Google (go on, try it), the only results you get back refer to me, or more precisely to the small part I played in the now legendary Scott-Murray-Guardian-online-cricket-coverage-rant. Naturally, being the latest in a long line of ironists, satirists and sarcasts, I take a certain pleasure at being recognised in the public domain for what I am. Nevertheless, I couldn't help feeling that the world was only being given a partial picture of my personality - not so much warts and all as just warts, as it were.

Well, no more !! Now I - and all of you - have the opportunity to display everything that is best about us. At last, this site puts the Paternal Optimist - and more importantly, the Boy Wonder, the Usual Suspects, Our American Cousins, and who knows who else in the months and years to come - right where they should be : at the heart of the blogosphere !!
